ABIOS

ABIOS® allows to prevent damage to works due to the proliferation of bacteria, fungi and microorganisms in general.

ABIOS® aspirates ambient air, sterilizes it and reinfects it into a completely inert atmosphere.

The main causes of the deterioration of Cultural Heritage are in fact those of biological nature: insects, fungi, mold and bacteria produce enormous and irreversible damage to the collections kept in public and private museums, archives and libraries.

Conservation Institutes, because of the large number of objects so to speak "attractive", are particularly vulnerable to this type of danger. It can be said that there is, in general, no place of conservation that does not show signs of partial or extensive infestations of parasites. Unfortunately these can recur over and over again over time; especially because of the great and continuous activity of those responsible for the degradation: insects, fungi, molds and bacteria.

Thanks to ABIOS® the storage environments will be healthier and under certain conditions the presence of bacteria and microorganisms in the air will be completely eliminated. This result, therefore, will not only be useful to the Works of Art, but the benefits will also be extended to human health.

The innovative ABIOS® (Aerosol BIological Sterilizer) device was developed through research within a European project, conducted between 2005 and 2007, with the participation of the University of Rome - Department of Phytopathology, of the NILU Institut ( Norway), Mycoteam (Norway), AMOS (Belgium), National Museum of Krakow (Poland).

Subsequently, further significant and decisive innovations were integrated with other more recent research and development activities.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

ABIOS® is based on the application of UV radiation to short waves that allow to eliminate microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, spores, etc.) suspended in air in the form of bio-aerosol. UV irradiation on the surrounding environment is inhibited by the special design of ABIOS® and by the development of its dynamic fluid geometry.

When the air is affected by ultraviolet radiation, part of the oxygen (O2) is transformed into ozone (O3) which is potentially very harmful to humans. With ABIOS® in fact the formation of ozone is avoided in the first instance through the adoption of opaque optical filters to the range of wavelengths responsible for generating ozone. However, it has been found that, despite the use of optical filters, small amounts of Ozone are still generated.

It was then the introduction of a particular innovative catalyst filter to allow the complete elimination of residual traces of ozone, reconverting them into oxygen, and to allow ABIOS® to become one of the best products on the market and to be patented.

The results of scientific laboratory tests have shown that the ozone concentration has decreased to values lower than those present in the laboratory before the application of ABIOS®!!

Thanks to the ozone elimination function, ABIOS® can be inserted without problems in environments frequented by people protecting not only the Works of Art, but also the people themselves who attend such environments.

In the design work, special care was given to the engineering of the air flow inside ABIOS® both to minimize as much as possible the pressure drops and noise, both to maximize the catalyst effect and the time of exposure of air to UV rays.

THE RESULTS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

The research began with the aim of obtaining a means of preventing the spread of micro-organisms in conservation environments and immediately the real danger of chemicals introduced into conservation environments was highlighted.

Think of what happens when chemicals are used in the air or on surfaces: the use of these methods requires the absence of man and in any case the substances are absorbed by the treated objects and, at a distance of time, are released in the exhibition environments frequented by people.

The research had therefore focused on methods that did not use chemicals and the solution was found with the design of a first innovative equipment, the ABIOS®.

The results of the tests conducted during the Project have provided some exciting data regarding the potential of prevention of machinery; In particular, the results of the tests carried out at the Microbiology Laboratory of the University of Rome La Sapienza showed a decrease in microbial air activity of 99.98% in 12 hours, inside a test room of 40 cubic meters.

The results of the experiments also led to even higher results than expected; it emerged that the benefits of air sterilization also involved the whole range of bacteria and microbes harmful to humans. These data therefore state that ABIOS® favours the well-being of people who work, visit or otherwise live in environments where the air is sterilized by the machine. Bio-aerosol can cause allergies, asthma and respiratory diseases.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ABIOS®

There are several aspects that characterize ABIOS® and make it a unique product:

• The great ability to prevent damage to the Cultural Heritage, even in climatic and environmental conditions not ideal, eliminating at the root the presence of infectious agents such as mold, fungi, bacteria and any biological agent carried by dust suspended in the air (particulate matter);

• The protection of human health and of conservation environments, as ABIOS® can operate in close contact with people thanks to its technical characteristics.

• Continuous operation ensures sterilization of environments up to 200 cubic meters (standard version);

• Fan rotation speed adjustable for use;

• Easy and immediate installation thanks to very small size and weight;

• Very small and easy maintenance tasks;

• Internal electronic controls on the functionality of the apparatus;

• Easy remote control thanks to remote control and signalling Leds.
