Given that Tirrenia s.r.l. in its sixty years of activity has always been sensitive to the respect and protection of cultural heritage, in recent years, our company is also consistently promoting among our clients the best and newest technologies used today for the conservation of artworks.
We are now very pleased to present TGN, a system of molecular separation of air, able to create conditions with the absence of oxygen that are deadly for parasites that infest and seriously damage artwork.
TGN replaces, using only the nitrogen in the air we usually breathe, the use of dangerous chemicals that until recently were the only alternative for these types of intervention, and over time have turned out to be harmful for the environment, humans and for the works.
TGN is 100% effective and its use is very simple.
The process can take place in two different ways, depending on the circumstances, by creating the appropriate envelopes sealed using a special heat-sealable plastic film,
or by installing a special waterproof zippered plastic curtain for its opening and closing.
Once the works are to be treated within the sealed bag or tent, they are connected through the TGN system with special valves which, quickly and independently, change the atmosphere to completely eliminate the oxygen and thus creating conditions lethal to the infesting parasites.
TGN is a simple and intuitive to use new technology, targeted precisely to improve the conservation of Cultural Heritage.
Institutes of conservation are prone to infections and infestations by pests such as insects or microorganisms found in bacterial mycosis that are found in artworks, mainly consisting of wood, paper, leather and textiles, organic substances necessary for their life.
These "attacks", if ignored, seriously undermine the integrity of the preserved artwork, damaging or destroying it completely, and so making a restoration almost impossible.
Consequently, institutes have increasingly adopted conservation techniques of disinfection and disinfestation able to completely eradicate these pests.
A new technology now being applied is the method of anoxia, which is to eliminate the pests simply by keeping the artworks in terms of lack of oxygen for twenty-one days. This mimics all the effects, and without any danger, replaces the use of the old traditional systems based mainly on washing in the autoclave and fumigation of the works to be treated with toxic chemical substances, such as ethylene oxide, methyl bromide and potassium cyanide, substances of very high concern for health, for the environment, and for the works preserved.
TGN system, using only atmospheric air, is able to produce pure nitrogen with values of 99.99% with extremely low content of oxygen molecules, which are essential for life of each type of insect or micro-organism.
Its application has the following advantages:

• Interventions carried out on site and without moving the artworks from their normal storage place. • No danger to the health of workers, to the environment and the to the material composition of the works.
• Ease of use and net cost savings over traditional methods of treatment with toxic gases.
You can create wrappers / curtains with varied sizes, geometric shapes and dimensions, depending on the quantity, shape, and type of works of art that are to undergo treatment.
Wrappers / curtains, once created, are connected by valves and small section plastic tubes to the TGN system, which, in little time and in a completely independent function, will change the atmosphere, completely eliminating oxygen and leaving only the nitrogen.
During this treatment phase, operators can continuously monitor the values of residual oxygen inside the enclosure using a special measuring instrument (Oxygene sensor).
The treatment can be considered terminated when the concentration of residual oxygen is detected at 0.1% -0.2%, considered lethal conditions for any type of pest.
At this point, the envelopes that have reached these values of residual oxygen, are disconnected from TGN system, and left in stasis under these conditions of modified atmosphere for twenty days, in order to eliminate the parasites during any stage of their life-cycle.
